"Love the care I have received here! This is my second time going to a sleep dental clinic. This clinic did way more to prepare for my device and is way more attentive than the first clinic I went to. That makes a big difference! I'm very satisfied and pleased with my new device. I'm starting to feel more rested, and I'm thankful for that!"

Frequently Asked Questions

Snoring often happens alongside sleep apnea, but it is not always indicative of the presence of this sleep condition. Although, snoring can show that there might be blocking in airways due to large throat tissue – especially if patients have specific lifestyle choices that lead to sleep apnea. Fortunately, the same treatment we offer for sleep apnea works for snoring as well. Our custom oral appliances are soft, comfortable and effective in preventing snoring sounds as well as apnea episodes. By slightly positioning the lower jaw forward, they open up the airway so that it is no longer obstructed.
Although anyone can have sleep apnea, not everyone snores. Because of this discrepancy, it is crucial to get a sleep study done in order to determine if you suffer from apnea or not. Here at our office, we can refer you to a local Sleep Physician who will make the process easy and comfortable for you. If needed, we will also be here to review your options for treatment and guide you through the process.
While the underlying causes of OSA differ from individual to individual, any person can get it, no matter their age or gender. The most widespread risk factors are:

  • Reaching over 40 years old
  • A large neck circumference (over 17 inches in men, 16 inches for women)
  • Carrying excess weight – nearly half of all OSA sufferers are obese
  • Being male – more males than females suffer from this condition
  • Having a big tongue or small jawbone
  • Enlarged tonsils and adenoids (particularly in children)
  • Using alcohol or sedatives which loosen the muscles in the airway
  • Nasal blockage due to a deviated septum or sinus and allergy problems
Many people cannot adequately treat their sleep apnea with CPAP due to the discomfort of the mask and machine. Therefore, a high percentage of users have difficulty using it or will not wear it at all. An oral appliance is a popular alternative to CPAP. This device is small, portable, fits comfortably and can provide similar treatment benefits without the hassle.
After using your oral appliance, you will have a follow-up sleep study to confirm its efficacy. You will then need to meet with the sleep medicine physician for an interpretation of these results.
Our team will work with you to see if your insurance company provides coverage for oral appliances. If not, we'll let you know and help you develop a financial plan so that treatment is still possible. Many people find that the quality of their lives greatly increases after beginning treatment for sleep apnea, making it well worth the time and money invested.
We understand that everyone's financial situation is different. That's why we offer financing options and will work with you to find a solution that fits your needs.
It usually only takes 5-10 days for patients to get used to the appliance. At first, it feels strange sleeping with a device in your mouth, but you'll quickly get over it. The appliance won't damage your teeth either; if they feel sore after using it, we can fix that with an adjustment.
They are constructed from tough acrylic, which can last for many years. Depending on how often you use them and how rough you are, they may only need to be replaced every 3-5 years. If you have a tendency to grind your teeth, though, you might need repairs or replacements more frequently.
A change in your bite is possible; however, depending on the positioning of your teeth and the current state of your bone, this shift can be minimized by using a morning re-positioning device.
The most frequently seen side effect is morning muscle soreness that generally dissipates within a few days. Some patients may experience either dry mouth or hypersalivation. As stated previously, some patients will have minor tooth movement.
Obstructive sleep apnea is unlikely to decrease with age; therefore your oral appliance will probably be a lifelong therapy. However, certain wellness factors such as significant weight loss may improve your symptoms.
Although you can buy appliances to help with sleep apnea, it's important to remember that they are not FDA approved. If they're not fitted properly, you may experience side effects such as jaw problems or too much movement of your teeth.
Unfortunately, if you suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, it's unlikely that your symptoms will get better with age. On the bright side, though, things like losing weight can help alleviate some of the discomforts caused by OSA.
